From the departure gate in Africa to your bedroom in America
The travel day is the part families worry about most. Here is exactly how it works, hour by hour.
Before you fly
- Carry your passport, I-20 or DS-2019, acceptance letter and SEVIS receipt in your hand luggage — never in a checked bag
- Print your host family's name, address and phone number on paper
- Pack two days of clothes and any medication in your carry-on
- Notify us and your host family of your final flight numbers one week before travel
Arriving in the United States

Immigration
Follow signs to 'Visitors'. Present your passport and I-20 or DS-2019. The officer will ask where you are studying and who you are staying with.

Baggage and customs
Collect your bags, then hand in your customs declaration. Do not bring fresh food, meat or plant material.

Connecting flight
Most students re-check bags and pass security again. Allow three hours; airline staff will help you if you ask.

Meeting your host family
They wait in the arrivals hall with a sign showing your name. Call or message us the moment you land.
Your first week
- Get a US phone number or eSIM within 48 hours
- Open a student bank account with your host parent
- Attend school orientation and meet the international student coordinator
- Expect jet lag and homesickness — both pass within two weeks
If something goes wrong
Missed connection, delayed bag, nobody at the gate: call the 24-hour emergency number printed on your travel card. Somebody answers every time, in your time zone.
